One of the biggest myths in the Australian automotive industry is that you must service your new car at the dealership to keep your warranty valid. This is simply not true.
What Australian Consumer Law Says
Under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, car manufacturers cannot void your warranty simply because you had your car serviced by an independent mechanic. As long as the service is performed according to the manufacturer specifications and the correct parts and fluids are used, your warranty remains valid.
What Is a Logbook Service?
A logbook service follows the exact schedule set out in your vehicle owner manual. Each service at a specific kilometre or time interval has a list of required inspections, replacements, and checks. The mechanic stamps your logbook after completing the work.
What We Do Differently From the Dealer
The work we perform is identical to what the dealer does — we follow the same manufacturer schedule, use parts that meet or exceed manufacturer specifications, and stamp your logbook. The difference is that we do not charge dealership prices.
How to Protect Yourself
- Keep all service receipts and invoices
- Make sure your logbook is stamped with the workshop details
- Use a licensed mechanic (we are fully licensed and insured)
- Keep records of parts used (we provide this on every invoice)
What If the Dealer Gives You Trouble?
If a dealer tries to refuse a warranty claim because you serviced elsewhere, they are likely breaching consumer law. You can lodge a complaint with the ACCC. In practice, this rarely happens because manufacturers know the law.
