No car is perfect. Even the most reliable models have known issues that tend to crop up at certain ages or kilometre marks. Knowing what to watch for helps you budget and catch problems early.
Toyota Corolla / Camry
Toyota is legendary for reliability, but they are not immune to issues:
- Oil consumption (2009-2011 models) — some engines burn oil between services. Monitor levels regularly
- Dashboard rattle — common in older models, annoying but not mechanical
- Water pump failure around 120,000-150,000 km — budget around $400-$600 for replacement
Mazda 3 / CX-5
- Clutch judder (manual models) — felt as a vibration when taking off. Can require clutch replacement ($1,200-$1,800)
- Infotainment glitches — the older MZD Connect system can be laggy. Software updates help
- DPF issues (diesel models with short trips) — the diesel particulate filter clogs with short urban driving. Needs highway driving to regenerate
Hyundai i30 / Tucson
- Dual-clutch transmission hesitation (DCT models) — the 7-speed DCT can be jerky at low speeds. Software updates improve it but some owners remain frustrated
- Engine knock (some 2.0L models) — has been subject to recalls. Check if your VIN is affected
- Air conditioning compressor — can fail earlier than expected, typically $800-$1,200 to replace
Ford Ranger / Toyota HiLux
- DPF problems (both models) — the number one complaint for modern diesel utes. Short trips and city driving clog the filter. Repair or replacement costs $1,500-$3,000
- Injector failure — diesel injectors can fail and are expensive ($300-$500 per injector plus labour)
- Leaf spring sag (HiLux) — especially if regularly loaded or towing. Replacement or upgrade springs cost $400-$800
Volkswagen Golf / Tiguan
- DSG transmission — the dual-clutch transmission needs its fluid changed every 40,000 km. Skip this and expect expensive repairs
- Timing chain tensioner (older TSI engines) — can fail and destroy the engine. Listen for a rattle on cold start. Preventive replacement costs around $1,500
- Water ingress — some models have issues with water leaking into the boot or cabin through seals
The Takeaway
Every car has its tendencies. A good mechanic who knows your model can watch for these common issues and catch them early. Regular servicing is the best prevention.
