One of the best things about living in Melbourne is the incredible driving roads within easy reach. From coastal highways to mountain passes, here are our favourite scenic drives — all within a few hours of Ringwood.
Great Ocean Road (Torquay to Apollo Bay)
Distance: About 160 km one way
Drive time: 2.5 – 3 hours (without stops)
Best for: Coastal views, the Twelve Apostles, beach towns
Australia’s most famous drive for good reason. The winding coastal road demands good brakes and tyres. Allow a full day or stay overnight to enjoy it without rushing.
Black Spur Drive (Healesville to Marysville)
Distance: About 30 km
Drive time: 40 minutes
Best for: Tall trees, lush ferns, easy day trip from Ringwood
One of Victoria’s most beautiful forest drives, right in our backyard. The towering mountain ash trees create a green tunnel effect. Stop at Marysville for lunch.
Yarra Valley Loop
Distance: About 100 km loop
Drive time: 1.5 – 2 hours
Best for: Wineries, food, rolling hills
Start from Ringwood, head through Lilydale and Healesville, loop through Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek, and back via Coldstream. World-class wineries and restaurants along the way.
Mount Donna Buang
Distance: About 80 km return from Ringwood
Drive time: 1 hour each way
Best for: Mountain views, rainforest walks, snow in winter
Drive up through Warburton to the summit at 1,250 metres. The Rainforest Gallery skywalk is worth a stop. In winter, you might even find snow. The road has some tight switchbacks — check your brakes and tyres.
Mornington Peninsula
Distance: About 100 km one way
Drive time: 1.5 hours
Best for: Beaches, hot springs, coastal villages
Head down the freeway and then cruise through Dromana, Sorrento, and Portsea. Great for a day trip with stops at beaches, cafes, and the Peninsula Hot Springs.
