When you buy a new or used car, the finance manager will almost certainly try to sell you an extended warranty. They can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000+. Whether it is worthwhile depends on several factors.

What Extended Warranties Cover

Policies vary widely, but most extended warranties cover mechanical and electrical component failures — engine, transmission, differential, air conditioning, power steering, and electrical systems. They typically do not cover wear items like brake pads, tyres, wiper blades, or batteries.

When It Might Be Worth It

  • European cars — BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Volkswagen have higher repair costs. A single major repair can exceed the warranty cost
  • Turbocharged or complex drivetrains — more technology means more that can go wrong
  • If you plan to keep the car long-term — the longer you own it beyond the manufacturer warranty, the more value an extended warranty provides
  • Peace of mind — if an unexpected $3,000 repair bill would significantly impact your finances, the predictable cost of a warranty has real value

When You Can Probably Skip It

  • Japanese cars with good reliability records — Toyota, Honda, and Mazda rarely have major failures. The odds are in your favour
  • If you maintain your car well — regular servicing prevents most catastrophic failures
  • If you have savings to cover a repair — self-insuring is usually cheaper in the long run for reliable cars

Read the Fine Print

Extended warranties often have exclusions, excess fees, and conditions (like mandatory servicing at approved workshops). Read the Product Disclosure Statement carefully before signing. Some policies are genuinely comprehensive while others are full of exclusions.

Your Consumer Rights

Remember that under Australian Consumer Law, products (including cars) must be of acceptable quality and last a reasonable time regardless of any warranty. If a major component fails prematurely, you may have rights beyond the warranty period. The ACCC has good guidance on this.
