Engine oil is your car’s lifeblood. It lubricates moving parts, cools the engine, and carries away contaminants. Running low on oil — even briefly — can cause irreversible engine damage. The good news is that checking it takes less than 2 minutes.

When to Check

  • At least once a month
  • Before any long trip
  • If you notice the oil light flickering
  • If you see oil spots where you park

How to Check (Step by Step)

1. Park on Level Ground

An uneven surface gives an inaccurate reading. Park on flat ground and turn off the engine.

2. Wait a Few Minutes

If you have been driving, wait 5 minutes for the oil to settle back into the sump. Checking immediately after driving will show a falsely low reading.

3. Find the Dipstick

Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick — it usually has a bright yellow or orange handle. Pull it out and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.

4. Re-Insert and Pull Out Again

Push the dipstick fully back in, wait a second, then pull it out again. This gives you an accurate reading.

5. Read the Level

The dipstick has two marks — minimum (low) and maximum (high). The oil film should be between these two marks. If it is at or below the minimum, add oil immediately.

6. Check the Colour and Consistency

  • Amber/golden — fresh, healthy oil
  • Dark brown — normal for oil that has been in use, still fine
  • Black and gritty — overdue for a change
  • Milky or frothy — possible coolant contamination (head gasket issue). See a mechanic immediately

Topping Up

If the level is low, add small amounts of the correct oil grade (check your owner manual). Pour a little, wait a minute, then recheck. Do not overfill — too much oil can cause damage too.

Why Some Cars Use More Oil

It is normal for some engines to use a small amount of oil between services, especially turbocharged or high-mileage engines. If you are regularly topping up more than 500ml between services, there may be a leak or internal wear that needs attention.
