The Australia Day long weekend is one of the busiest on our roads. Whether you are heading to the beach, a barbecue, a camping spot, or visiting family, preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable trip.
Before You Leave
Quick Vehicle Check
- Check tyre pressures (including the spare) — adjust for load if carrying extra passengers and gear
- Top up windscreen washer fluid
- Make sure all lights are working
- Check engine oil level
- Test your air conditioning — you will need it
Plan Your Route
Check for road closures and known congestion points. Popular beach towns and regional areas can have significant delays. Having an alternative route planned saves time and frustration.
Driving in the Heat
- Keep the cabin cool — heat contributes to driver fatigue
- Carry more water than you think you need
- Watch your temperature gauge in stop-start traffic
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even briefly
Fatigue Management
Take a 15-minute break every 2 hours. Swap drivers if possible. If you feel drowsy, pull over and have a power nap — 15 minutes of sleep is more effective than coffee. Fatigue-related crashes spike on long weekends.
If You Break Down
- Pull as far off the road as possible
- Turn on hazard lights
- Stay with your vehicle — it is more visible than a person walking
- Call roadside assistance
- If you are on a highway, exit through the passenger side (away from traffic)
Make sure your car is ready for the long weekend. Book a quick safety check at Heatherdale Automotive before you hit the road.
