Whether you are heading down the Great Ocean Road, up to the Murray, or across to Adelaide, a long road trip is one of the great Australian experiences. The last thing you want is a breakdown ruining the adventure.

One Week Before

  • Book a service if you are due or close to due
  • Check your tyres including the spare — pressure, tread depth, and condition
  • Test all lights — headlights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights
  • Check your wiper blades and washer fluid
  • Test your battery — especially if it is over 3 years old
  • Check your coolant level and condition

The Day Before

  • Check engine oil and top up if needed
  • Clean your windscreen inside and out for maximum visibility
  • Adjust your mirrors for the driving position you will use
  • Plan your fuel stops — do not rely on finding servos in remote areas

Pack an Emergency Kit

  • Jumper leads
  • Tyre inflator or mini compressor
  • Torch with fresh batteries
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Water (for you and potentially the radiator)
  • Phone charger and car charger cable
  • Roadside assistance membership details
  • Owner manual

On the Road

  • Take a break every 2 hours — fatigue kills more Australians on the road than speeding
  • Monitor your temperature gauge, especially in hot weather or when climbing hills
  • Check tyre pressures at fuel stops if you have a gauge
  • If something feels or sounds wrong, pull over and investigate

After the Trip

Give your car a once-over when you get home. Check for stone chips in the windscreen, bugs blocking the radiator, and any new noises or issues that developed during the drive.
