Brakes are the most important safety system on your car. They are the difference between stopping safely and a collision. Yet many drivers put off brake repairs until the last possible moment. Here are 5 signs that your brakes need attention now — not next month.

1. High-Pitched Squealing

Most brake pads have a built-in wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to contact the rotor and create a squealing sound when the pads are getting thin. This is your early warning system. The squealing typically happens at low speeds and goes away when you press the brake pedal. If you hear this consistently, you have a few weeks before the pads wear through completely.

2. Grinding or Growling

If the squeal has turned into a grinding or growling sound, the brake pads are completely worn and metal is now pressing against the rotor. Every second you drive like this is damaging the rotors, which are much more expensive to replace than pads alone. Stop driving and get your car to a mechanic immediately.

3. Vibration Through the Pedal or Steering Wheel

A pulsating brake pedal or vibration through the steering wheel when braking usually indicates warped rotors. This happens when brake rotors overheat — often from extended braking on hills or aggressive driving. Warped rotors reduce braking effectiveness and should be machined or replaced.

4. Car Pulls to One Side When Braking

If your car veers left or right when you press the brakes, you may have a sticking calliper, uneven pad wear, or a hydraulic issue on one side. This is dangerous because it makes emergency braking unpredictable.

5. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

If the pedal feels softer than usual or sinks closer to the floor, there may be air in the brake lines, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. A spongy pedal means reduced braking force — do not ignore this.

What to Do
